Chapter Eleven

Axel held Nora for two hours. The only movement he made was his hand smoothing over her back every time she stirred. He didn’t dare fall asleep himself because he was even more afraid to wake up than she was.

The fear was real. What if today had never happened, and he was dreaming just like she’d suggested?

The feel of her hair on his hand, the scent of vanilla from the shampoo she’d used, the rise and fall of her chest, the warmth of her body against his... Heaven.

There were no words for what he was feeling, and he was beyond certain he was head-over-heels in love with her. Damn, she was strong. She’d been to hell and back several times, and she would need more help than he could provide.

Diane had mentioned a counselor. Dr. Carol Langston. Kally and Gemma both went to her and loved her. Axel would encourage Nora to contact her right away.

God, she needed things. Clothes, for starters. And a phone. He had no intention of even leaving the room she was in except to let her use the bathroom alone. But she would need to be able to contact Gemma and Kally and develop friendships. She’d need to stay in contact with Dr. Langston, as well as a general practitioner.

There was so much she didn’t know. It was going to take time. If he had to quit his job, he would. He had enough savings to get by for at least a year without working. He was thirty-two years old, and he’d been single all his life. Living undercover for two years had fattened his bank account considerably. Before that, he’d had an apartment in which he’d rarely spent time. Eight months ago, he’d rented a small furnished apartment, not caring about anything except finding Nora.

He would need to shift his thinking now. Find them someplace to stay for the short term and start looking for someplace larger. Here? Probably here. Denver. Where she could be near the only people she knew. Taking her back to Wyoming was out of the question. She wouldn’t know a soul there, and he couldn’t go back to working in an office and leave her alone.

Thomas was not going to like this, but the man surely suspected he’d have to leave. Maybe Axel could transfer to the Denver branch of the FBI. But he had no intention of getting assigned to a new case that would take him away from Nora, even for an hour right now.

When she stirred in his arms, he eased his hold. A moment later, she jerked awake and shoved off him, eyes wide. She stared down at him.

His hand was threaded in her hair. He smiled at her. “I’m still here.”

She started crying again, silent tears that slid down her cheeks. “You’re here.” She sat up next to him, keeping her hands on his chest. “I need to use the bathroom.” She glanced toward it and didn’t move.

“It’s okay,” he encouraged. “I’ll wait right here.
